My birthday is in March...so I treated myself A LOT last month. Sometimes when we’re celebrating or we’re stressed, we can easily overindulge. For me, that usually means lots of gluten-free and dairy-free sweets and treats (cakes, chocolates, popsicles, pizza, pancakes, dosas, cotton candy, raw cookie dough, frosting straight out of the container with a spoon).🎂🍰🧁🥧🍦🍫🍬🍭🍯🥟🌮🍕🥞🍨
Yeesh! Not only is my gut unhappy, but my energy and focus took a big hit, my skin broke out and 🤧I get congested! I know these are all signs that I’m headed in the wrong direction so April, I’m focusing on detox and rejuvenation! Who’s with me?!

Overstimulation is a major issue for those who are

Overstimulation is a major issue for those who are highly sensitive empaths and / or dealing with chronic illnesses, like autoimmunity.
⠀
Overstimulation occurs when the world comes in and you don't really have time, space or bandwidth to process and integrate all the new information.
⠀
We end up carrying heavy burdens. Stress from ourselves, from our families, from our work environment, from the world at large.
⠀
Even simply watching the news or a violent movie can be really devastating to someone who is highly sensitive.
⠀
Right now especially can be a more difficult time for #empaths and #HSP
⠀
Not having the space to process the information will create areas of stuck, bundled energy in our MindBody field. "A lot of information just came in. I can't deal with it now, so I'm going to compress it and store it until I have time to deal with it later."
⠀
They'll do that over and over without truly taking the time to unpack and process the experiences later. This stuck energy (trauma) ends up manifesting as pain or imbalance in the body. It ends up manifesting as symptoms, as weaknesses, broken links here and there throughout their health.
⠀
For somebody who's really sensitive, it's really important not just to avoid the world, not to create a bubble and live in a sterile environment. That's actually the opposite of what we should be doing.
⠀
Instead, we need to find ways to interact with others in the world that is comfortable for us, but also gives us time and space to later process everything that came in and reintegrate it into our own body.

Some ways to process overstimulation:
💙Balance periods of activity + stimulation with 2x rest + silence + stillness
💙Get bodywork (chiropractic adjustment, energy healing, massage)
💙Talk to a dear friend or family member who *gets* you
💙Have a slow, comforting, quiet meal
💙Spend time in nature, soak up sun, breath fresh air, experience textures, forest bathe

Jokes aside, we’re human and eating foods that help you and your cells feel great is important. Sometimes that’s a cookie. Sometimes that’s a salad. Sometimes that’s a steak. Learning about your body and connecting with your intuition (not your wounds) takes a while. When you do, you will figure what foods fuel your vitality and which ones drain your life energy. Lately, I’ve been having a dosa “waffle” 🌮 with every meal and feeling great! Dosas are thin, crispy, savory South Indian “pancakes” or “crepes” made from 2 ingredients: fermented rice and lentil flour. I pour the batter into a waffle iron for a crispy quick fix!

Relief Care vs Wellness Care People seek help when they’re in crisis or pain. In other words, something happened that is preventing them from living the life they want. Not many people focus on improving their health unless it’s significantly impacting their lives. Which is totally understandable. We generally don’t set ourselves up to have an abundance of time and resources set aside just to take care of ourselves! So when people focus on their health and begin the road to recovery, the first stage is all about managing symptoms. Regaining functions they lost. It’s just about getting by. And the moment they become PAIN free - there’s one of two directions they can take. They can stop there and be content with a life of getting by. This is called RELIEF CARE. The main goal with relief care is simply to be PAIN-free. This can be done by only taking care of yourself when there’s symptoms or by masking the symptoms all together. The problem with relief care is two-fold. One - people end up going on a roller coaster of symptoms - taking care of themselves - no symptom - ignoring themselves - symptoms etc. Secondly, masking the pain doesn’t solve the root cause of the problem. Now, there’s another approach to health called WELLNESS CARE. In the beginning, WELLNESS CARE looks the same as RELIEF CARE. People have problems or symptoms, and they’re looking for ways to relieve those symptoms. The difference is when they reach the PAIN-FREE state, they keep going. They continue to look for ways to regain, maintain and optimize their function. This is called WELLNESS. It’s an amazing state of well-being where an individual continues to experience more and more energy, vitality and strength they never even knew was possible. WELLNESS is where people achieve another level of existence.

I heard this phrase often growing up. Anytime I had an ache, pain or “off” feeling, I was dismissed for being “too sensitive,” “whiny,” or just “making it up.”
⠀
Then, while I was training to become a doctor, I ran bloodwork on myself and learned that I had Hashimoto’s - an autoimmune disease - and all of a sudden I had the explanation to everything I had experienced previously in my life that everybody else had written off.

The different diagnoses within autoimmune diseases tend to be based on the target tissue that's getting damaged.
⠀
👉When you have multiple sclerosis, it’s the myelin sheath of your nervous system.
👉When you have Hashimoto's thyroiditis, it's your thyroid.
👉When you have rheumatoid arthritis, it's your joints.
⠀
All of these are disorders are considered in the family of autoimmune diseases, even though they all have a different tissue that is getting damaged. With autoimmunity, your cells get tagged incorrectly as non-self and your body kind of turns on itself and you start attacking your own tissue. It’s progressive, degenerative and has no cure. At least that what conventional medicine says about autoimmune disease...

However, Functional Medicine doctors and alternative doctors are really on the cutting edge of understanding that all of these autoimmune diseases are related somehow. There are countless success stories of autoimmune disease being healed, put into remission or even reversed! (Myself included!)We’re starting to understand that they're all related in a certain way, and they all have a similar root cause.

All autoimmune diseases have a root dysfunction of the immune system. When you find the ROOT CAUSE of that dysfunction, you can start to correct and reverse the damage it is causing.⠀

Whenever I start to notice any sort of symptom... instead of getting scared, upset, or ashamed that a symptom resurfaced...I ask myself those questions.
⠀
For example, if have a few sleepless nights or eat a cookie with tapioca (which I’m sensitive to), within a week I start getting some skin issues and I'll start feeling that old anxiety and depression that is so familiar from my teens.
⠀
Because of my experience, I know that my symptoms are coming because I pushed myself to far or exposed myself to something that I'm sensitive to. It keeps me spinning out and stressing more.

“I'm having inflammatory reaction, and I'm just going to do what I can right now to reduce the inflammation."

Some things I do right away when I notice inflammation returning:

✅I hop into an infrared sauna to sweat it out
✅Take anti-inflammatory herbs & homeopathy
✅Go on a really simple, easy to digest diet
✅I drink bone broth 1-2x a day
✅I sleep a lot

I make sure that I give my body the opportunity to handle the inflammation and get back to a state where I can have more balance.

Social media is designed to feed off the areas in our ♥️ and 🧠 that seek social connection and look for comparisons. What tricks do you use to keep sane while engaging in social media? Here are some of mine. In fact, these apply IRL too. 1. TIMING: I really only post and engage when I feel moved to. Sometimes that’s multiple times a day, sometimes that’s weeks apart. That might mess up my “algorithm” but 🤷🏽‍♀️ to that. 2. CONVERSATIONS: I respond to as many comment and posts as I can with some thoughtfulness and words. Likes and Emoji responses are pretty unsatisfying if they’re all we’re saying to each other. 3. HUMOR: In life and online, I like to weave in as much humor and laughter and fun as possible, even for heavy topics. This is why I follow a lot of dog and meme accounts. 4. VULNERABILITY: It’s true, most people are NOT sharing their failures. One exception I can think of is the many health bloggers and health seekers who are changing the face of healing (autoimmunity and chronic disease) with their moving stories of failures...but they usually don’t share the failures until they include their comebacks. This is true for me too. When I’m really struggling with something in the present moment, I turn to a small group of my loved ones and disengage from larger/group interactions. This approach isn’t about trying to appear perfect online. It’s simply because 1-on-1 love, support and connection in real life work best for me. This slowing/quieting help me get to the essence...of myself, the problem and the lesson. 5. BOUNDARIES: Unfollow accounts that stir up any ick feelings for you, block/ban anyone who’s ever been rude, unkind or inappropriate to you and follow things that inspire you (Did I mention dog memes?) Yes. 6. PRIORITIES: Do you have something better to do? Lunch with a friend? Book to read? Mom to FaceTime? Dog to walk? Baby to cuddle? Project to work on? Meal to cook? Garden to tend? Dinner with your spouse? Vacation to enjoy? Breathtaking vista to look at (with your eyes!) Go do those things first. Then if you have some time left, get on social media? DM while you BM? BIOHACKING WISDOM
The Chinese had it figured out thousands of years ago. This is a Chinese Meridian Clock or Horary Clock. It divides the day into two hour blocks per meridian. This modernized version provides suggestions of daily activities for each block. When I follow this rhythm, I feel like a superhero. I have energy at the proper time and feel relaxed throughout the day. I also experience a sweet balance of work/personal life with lots of connection to myself, other people and the earth. Much of this wisdom is rooted in our own circadian rhythm. We have an internal clock that syncs our biochemical processes to the cycle of daylight. When our internal rhythm aligns with the external environment - magical things happen. Overall, our health and well-being improve. Our hormones become more balanced. Our digestion/metabolism is optimized. Our sleep is more restful. Our relationships become balanced. And we all feel like superheroes. How amazing is that?! @DrTitusChiu uses the Horary Clock to biohack a remedy for jet lag! Once you begin traveling, every two hours do an acupressure massage of the listed Meridian Point (according to the time at your destination.) I.e. If you’re headed to Paris, as soon as travels begin, check the time in Paris and massage the corresponding meridian point for a few minutes. Then we repeat the next point 2 hours later. So if at take off from SFO, it’s already 5-7pm in Paris, we massage the inner knee. Then 2 hours later, the palm of the hand. Get it?! It’s automatically starts syncing your internal clock to the new time zone so once you’ve landed your body has acclimated to the new rhythm! This trick works for at home too. Even if you’re not traveling you can do this to reset your circadian rhythm and resolve late night insomnia and groggy mornings!

Who snoozed this morning?! ⏰🙇‍♀️💤 My whole life I was a night owl. Staying up late to “day dream”, process my thoughts, make art, listen to music and write the most impressive last minute essays. I loved the creative and introspective nighttime, but waking all night and sleeping all day wreaks havoc on your body, brain and hormones. Even if you don’t think it’s affecting you...it is. A few years ago, I easily shifted to a morning person. Waking up without an alarm: well-rested, energized and enthusiastic! I never even thought that was possible! “Why me?”

On my health journey, in order to truly heal, I had to change my mind. I don't mean that I sat down one day and decided to heal. It was a long and difficult process to learn how to think and feel differently about myself and my autoimmunity.
⠀
When I first discovered my body was producing antibodies to my own thyroid tissue, I felt a slew of emotions that I didn't know how to process. Then I started to ask, "Why me?"
⠀
I felt all this fear, shame, anger, sadness and regret, and all of these feelings compounded my current stress and depression.
⠀
Then I spent years trying to fix it.
⠀
I worked so hard to take care of my health by:
✅Drastically changing my diet
✅Eliminating all possible toxins
✅Visiting my chiropractor regularly
✅Reducing stress
✅Taking long baths
✅Meditating
✅Getting massages
✅Exercising
✅Nurturing loving relationships
⠀
By doing all of this, I was getting better, but I wasn't healing. I was still missing one piece; my perspective
⠀
Eventually, my perspective started to change as I looked for things to love about myself and my life, if only to write it in my gratitude journal
⠀
Soon I saw I was abundant with love, joy, and potential. I didn't have to change anything except my mind. I no longer saw myself as a cursed, pathetic, unlovable, diseased person with an autoimmune death sentence
⠀
Through all the hard work I was doing to get healthier and prevent further autoimmune damage, what I really needed to do was stop focusing on my disease and start loving myself and my life
⠀
Don't get me wrong, all other steps I took was essential. But when I finally learned how to live with these healthy habits, and not define myself by my disease, I began to heal
⠀
Healing from Hashimoto's & other autoimmune conditions is a long but empowering journey
⠀
It's not always easy, and I guarantee there will be setbacks. But one day, I hope you can look back on the path you've traveled, and see this autoimmune catalyst as a blessing instead of a curse

When was the last time you stopped to…
🌿Feel the touch of the grass in your feet?
🌅Delight in the sight of the sunset?
🌧Appreciate the sound of the rain on the roof?
🌻Relish the smell of the flowers on your morning walk?

We as humans used to be so connected to our surroundings and all of our different senses, but now we spend most of our time in our heads that using our senses to connect with ourselves requires effort.
⠀
If we ignore our senses, we also disconnect from our feelings -- we become out of sync with our mind and body. We might even find ourselves actively numbing or muting our senses by reading, watching TV or scrolling on Social Media -- or any other thing we do to escape feeling a feeling.
⠀
If we ignore our senses and disconnect from our feelings, we accumulate unprocessed energy in the body (aka trauma). When we don’t have the chance to integrate trauma, it can take root in the body.
⠀
It’s like a cascade event:
Disconnect from senses ▶︎ Disconnect from feelings ▶︎ Built up trauma
⠀
The opposite way to break the cascade is:
Awareness ▶︎ Acknowledgement ▶︎ Embodiment
⠀
Even if you have a feeling of fear, instead of muting it or ignoring it, focus on embracing it. Ask yourself...

An example of I how I did this exercise before speaking at an event:
I was feeling very nervous…so I asked myself the above questions:
👉Where is it in my body? I’m feeling very nervous in my throat, because im getting ready to speak to a big crowd.
👉What does it feel like? It’s tingling. It’s like I can’t breath…
.
Once I brought awareness to it and breathed through the uncomfortable feeling, the fear stopped getting louder and louder.

The more you can create a sensory description, experience of it, and embody it in your senses… The more you have the opportunity to let the experience (trauma) have space to exist and communicate -- and the opportunity to release.

What do you do to feel better during a flare up?

With Hashimoto's and autoimmunity, I can feel fantastic one day and knocked out the next. Usually triggered by long work days, life stress, funky food or travel.
⠀
As long as I have my loving family, a warm bed, soft blankets and my go-to homeopathic remedies, I'm happy. I also fast (to give my guts a break and allow my immune system an opportunity to clean house) and get a chiropractic adjustment (to clear up any muffled noise between my brain and my body).

Trauma = Overwhelm.
Trauma is an overwhelming experience or energy from an event that is stuck in one place. One way for you to stop trauma (such as feelings, physical events, chemical reactions, etc.) from affecting your quality of life is to process it as soon as it happens. Therefore, it’s crucial to know the 2 timelines of how you can get exposed to trauma.

📌2 timelines of how you can be exposed to trauma📌
⠀
1️⃣Gradual -- This is when a trauma happens over a longer period of time
⠀
► A co-worker who is passive aggressive towards you on a daily basis
► Daily exposure to chemicals found in beauty products
► You use your keyboard for long periods of time in an incorrect ergonomic position
► E M F or exposure to Wifi
► Toxic exposure to pesticides in our food
► Low level exposure to mold in your house
► Becoming frustrated with traffic on your daily commute

2️⃣Sudden -- This is when a trauma happens at a very specific point in time. Usually you can remember exactly the situation {{ it might even feel like a movie in your head 🎥 }}
⠀
► A stranger who makes a sarcastic, joking insult at you
► You have fall riding your mountain bike
► Exposure to a large environmental or toxic event (Think: Chernobyl)
► Surgery with a bunch of drugs all at once
► The loss of a loved one
► Car accident
► A big fight with a loved one

These are the two ways you can become exposed to trauma. In order to process it, there are a few different MindBody methods that I use to release trapped traumas in the body:

✅Bodywork: You can do this on your own or with a practitioner
✅Energy medicine
✅Homeopathy
✅Mindfulness / self inquiry exercises (journaling, listening to an audiobook)

Depending on your culture’s standards you might be told that something is wrong or shameful, while in another culture the same thing might be okay and even celebrated.
⠀
Did you know that what our community believes (do / say / think) might impact body function?
⠀
For example, in some cultures, menopause is considered very shameful, while in other cultures, it’s called the second spring, and the wisdom it brings is celebrated.
⠀
Studies have shown in countries where menopause is viewed negatively, women are more likely to release inflammatory cytokines, while in countries where it’s celebrated we see women very healthy.
⠀
However, it’s not only the large cultural scene that can impact the way we think/feel.
⠀
For example, I remember when I was in middle school, there were girls either very proud or very embarrassed about their first period -- the difference was often related to how periods were talked about at home.
⠀
Our circle of influence: parents, relatives, friends, media can impact the way we perceive our experiences, either in a positive or traumatic way.
⠀
This things that edit our idea of what is acceptable in our culture are called cultural editors… In my opinion if we are not aware that our circle of influence can edit or impact our mindset...we walk through life without intention.

I’m spending the weekend surrounding myself with everything that makes my heart go flutter.💗 I *finally* set up my art studio and hung tiny memories in every corner. 🌈 My artistic past and experience as a creative and sensitive person
🩺 My doctorate training in science and functional medicine

These 2 contradictory experiences have led me to who I am and the type of people that I help

I find that I attract two types of clients...The Yin & The Yang.
⠀
The Yang clients
✅ Investigated Functional Medicine
✅ Changed their diet & lifestyle drastically
✅ Experimented with various supplement regime
✅ Completed extensive lab testing
✅ Followed strict protocols (ie. detox, exercise, etc)

The Yin clients
✅ Explored their Mental and Emotional Health
✅ Learned to overcome limiting beliefs
✅ Surrendered to bodywork and energy medicine
✅ Receive therapy for past traumas
✅ Experience various spiritual practices

While both saw some initial success with what they implemented, they always feel like they’re still missing a piece to the puzzle. The piece that would allow them to experience a deeper level of healing.

With my clients who’ve gone the Yang route, I often find they haven’t balanced their holistic healing with tools from the Yin approach and vice versa.

This is where I come in.

In all my years of living with Hashimoto’s and Celiac autoimmunity, healing myself and then working to help others heal from chronic illness, I’ve noticed some characteristic patterns that need deeper mind-body-spirit healing.

Often, chronic illness and autoimmunity will afflict people who:
⠀⠀
👉Are empathetic, intuitive, highly-sensitive people (who absorb others energies and problems)
⠀⠀
👉Have difficulty saying NO (to others or to themselves – thus are often stretched thin)
⠀⠀
👉Struggle with ideas of self-worthiness & belonging in this world (not wanting to step on other people’s toes, raising their hand in a group to ask a question/contribute and starting their sentences with “I’m sorry (to take up space/time/attention)...”
⠀⠀
👉Seek control & perfectionism in their own lives and in the lives of the people they love (Nothing is ever good enough, including themselves.)
⠀⠀
👉Have difficulty trusting (mistrust of the world, of others, and of their own self & bodies)

I know I previously struggled with many of these thought patterns before reframing my mind, incorporating self-care rituals, and reframing my health challenges.

This is one of the reasons I’m so passionate about helping other creative, sensitive souls. I want to provide a safe space for them to learn how to listen to their body signals, connect with others like themselves, and take back their own innate healing powers.

I love to spend slow, quality time with people I care about and explore their hopes, imaginations, philosophies and even pains and traumas. And dream big with them! Do I do this for myself in my alone time?
Absolutely! I also like to laugh at silly, hilarious and subtle ironies in the world with my bestest of friends. Do I laugh at things when alone too?

I never planned on being a doctor.

My first career was as a multimedia artist.
⠀⠀
However, during that time, (like many of the people I now provide care for) I was struggling for many years with “unexplainable” health issues: chronic fatigue, vague pain, low energy, hormonal imbalance, acne, anxiety and depression.

Unbeknownst to me, I was experiencing the all-to-common story of mismanaged autoimmunity (#HashimotosThyroiditis #CeliacDisease). I fell into the dark and confusing waters of navigating my symptoms through conventional medicine.

After transforming my own health with MindBody medicine, I couldn’t help but dedicate my life to helping others achieve their highest potential – physical, emotional and energetic – through the same holistic, natural approach I used to overcome my autoimmunity.

This was me.
⠀
Right before my body started falling apart, I experienced a large emotional trauma that I didn’t know how to handle at the time.
⠀
It wasn’t until many years later that I made the connection between that traumatic event and the onset of my Hashimoto’s.
⠀
Now when I’m working with clients who are struggling with Hashimoto’s (or really any other autoimmune condition or chronic illness) I often find that a big traumatic event (physical OR emotional) or the accumulation of several smaller traumatic events often lead to the onset or tipping point of their symptoms.

We work together to find ways to release the past traumatic events from the body as well as repattern the ongoing habitual stress response. Shifting their nervous system from fight/flight/freeze to rest + digest.

While training to become a doctor, it was actually

While training to become a doctor, it was actually BY ACCIDENT that I learned about autoimmunity going on in my own body. The news came as a shock.

The discovery began with a blood test. Ironically, I expected to run it as an example, “What does a healthy person's blood look like?”
⠀
👉 At the time, despite having symptoms, I thought I was “normal” and actually super healthy! Lo and behold, the tests come back, and I had through-the-roof high levels of thyroid antibodies. #hashimotos
⠀
After the initial shock, I set off in a new direction to learn everything I could about autoimmune disease and the thyroid.
⠀
I thought I had already overcome all my past health problems. This new discovery opened up a can of worms I didn't know anything about and hadn't addressed. I was alarmed and scared.
⠀
I started running the whole battery of functional medicine tests:
✅Stool and urine tests
✅Food sensitivity
✅Chemical toxins
✅Hidden infections
✅Adrenal stress index
✅Sex Hormones
⠀
Most came back pretty out of whack. But it also explained the ROOT CAUSE of my history of chronic FATIGUE, vague PAIN, GUT and SKIN issues. It took time to see this as a blessing. I learned so much about health, became connected to my own mind+body and took actions to optimize my health.

For example, my stool test revealed massive gut microbiome imbalance and hidden infections...which now makes sense after years of OTC drug use, antibiotics, unmanaged emotional stress and a high-carb/sugar SAD diet.

I find it fascinating that I probably wouldn’t have found any of this out and would continue to think of myself as “normal” even though I has autoimmunity slowly raging. If it hadn't been for the specialized testing I ran on myself, my imbalances would have SILENTLY gotten worse over the years and I know, later in life, I’d get another shocking health scare.

I encourage you to consider investing in specialized lab testing for yourself to see what you can uncover! It’s crazy what we think is “normal” and “healthy”. It’s also amazing that there are levels of wellness + vitality that we don’t even know exist yet!

The effects of trauma can look drastically different from person to person.
⠀
I define trauma as stored potential in our body. It’s information. And often we’ll label it as good or bad. But it’s just information. It becomes “traumatic” when we disconnect, store old memories and get stuck (physically, mentally, or emotionally).
⠀
Once you are able process the information (verbally OR non-verbally) and create meaning out of the experience, you will release the stranglehold of trauma and integrate the wisdom into your body, mind, or energy field. This leads to expansion of your consciousness.
⠀
So even if you’ve experienced small or large traumas in your life -- you can overcome and release past traumas through several different methods including bodywork, energy medicine and MindBody techniques.

There are two different ways to view our pain (and one of the ways often gets overlooked in healthcare.)
⠀
Trauma can be objective or subjective. 1️⃣OBJECTIVE
This is what most people would categorize as trauma. It’s obvious from everyone’s perspective. There is rarely a dispute about whether or not an individual could be dealing with the repercussions of a traumatic event.
⠀
Some things that are often classified as objective trauma:
►Blatant abuse
►War
►Car accident
►Exposure to a large environmental toxin event. Think: Chernobyl
►A hard fall
⠀
2️⃣SUBJECTIVE
This type of trauma is experienced from an individual’s point of view. An event may be traumatic for one person, and not for another.
⠀
This type of trauma often gets dismissed by others, especially the impact it can have on a person or group’s long term health. Someone may be called “too sensitive” or their reality may be suppressed or diminished because others don’t understand or validate these subjective traumas.
⠀
Some examples of subjective trauma:
►A disagreement with a loved one — one may feel relief and see the disagreement as an opportunity for growth while the other person may feel very scared and withdraw
►A 70+ hour work week — one may feel accomplished by fulfilling their purpose and passion, while another person may feel crushed and neglect their other needs
►Jokes or micro aggressions — about a person’s race, ethnicity, sexuality, appearance or other differences. Some might find this funny and playful and others experience pain and suffering.
►A public gathering full of stimuli — for someone the lights, sound, and all the other people may be too overstimulating, for someone else it could be a source of joy, connection and fun.

In terms of health - neither type of trauma is more valid. Both types of unresolved trauma will lead to imbalance, disease and chronic illness. I have noticed in my private practice that when we shed a light on this in a gentle and systematic way (especially subjective trauma) it allows people to acknowledge stuff they’ve ignored or were unaware of... and the healing can begin.
